I love Corey Taylor. This could easily be the entire review and nothing else would be needed. From the guy that I was rolling my eyes about when my then boyfriend, now husband was obsessed with Slipknot, to “wow, this guy can really sing” to “omg he is the kindest and most adorable and most talented guy ever”, he’s really grown on me over the years, to the point where I really wanted to see him live again, even if I can’t say I’m all too excited about his solo work.
But let’s start with the beginning. The evening was opened by Chakora, a fun groovy band that unfortunately struggled to get the audience going and seemed a bit uncomfortable with the opening position.
Then followed Siamese, who were pretty much at the opposite pole. The lead singer had that sort of slick self-assured charisma and did a great job of connecting with the crowd, even if the sound wasn’t really on his side and we had a hard time understanding much of his vocals. I’m really not a fan of screams that go into a sweet cheesy chorus, so I didn’t like their music all that much, but it was still enjoyable, mostly because of the aforementioned lead singer who had a strong stage presence and managed to make a good atmosphere.
And then Corey. Sadly the sound issues continued throughout his performance as well, which was a big disappointment, but things got better as the show progressed and in the end nothing could dampen my excitement. The setlist was a mix between his solo work, Slipknot and Stone Sour and although I would’ve preferred less of the solo stuff and more of his “classics” (I know, bad unsupportive fan, heh), I have to say I have fallen completely in love with From can to can’t, which is absolutely gorgeous and goosebumps-inducing. Also chill-inducing and full of wonderful emotion where Through the glass and Snuff, which if you remember from my previous reviews, are how Corey actually won me over back when I thought he’s just the crazy screaming dude with the weird mask. And because I have now embraced other types of music, I lost my mind during Before I forget, Made of scars and Duality and was super excited to hear them live. I was expecting some moshpits or something, but the crowd was surprisingly tame. You could tell they really connected with the artist, it wasn’t for lack of interest, but this time it was more with the mellow side of him and less of the bang your head against of wall kind of energy.
Corey himself was more focused on the “gentle” side. We were still motherfuckers, but he also opened up about how his wife pretty much saved his life when he was in a dark place and he talked a lot about being grateful for his current life, the fans, his family etc. It was a very positive relaxed atmosphere and Corey is such a sweetheart. He exudes life and joy and I love how he doesn’t take himself seriously at all and one moment he can hype the crowd by giving a looong “serious” speech littered with “before I forget”s, then he can cheerfully sing Spongebob and then can make us teary-eyed by candidly declaring his love for his wife.
It was a bit of a “look where we are now” kind of show, a mix between nostalgia for the tumultuous days of our younger years and exhibiting the growth and peace of maturity, and both Corey’s attitude and the setlist he chose reflected this. It was fun and sweet, and crazy and emotional, it was quite a lovely experience.
